Jenna Ortega recently shared her views on Hollywood’s relationship with political correctness, expressing concerns that it may compromise the integrity of actors. In an interview with Vanity Fair, the 21-year-old actress argued that the pressure to be politically correct can strip away honesty and authenticity in the industry.
“The business we work in is so touchy-feely,” Ortega said. “Everyone wants to be politically correct, but in doing so, we lose a lot of our humanity and integrity because it lacks honesty.”
Ortega expressed a desire for more open dialogue in Hollywood. “I wish we had a better sense of conversation,” she continued. “Imagine if everyone could say what they felt without being judged, sparking debate instead of arguments.”
Her perspective likely stems from the controversy surrounding her Scream co-star Melissa Barrera, who was fired after posting support for Palestine during its conflict with Israel. Spyglass Media Group, the producer of Scream, cited a zero-tolerance policy for hate speech as the reason for Barrera’s removal.
Ortega left the Scream franchise shortly after Barrera’s firing, officially due to scheduling conflicts.
In the same interview, Ortega shared humorous advice from a cello instructor for her role in Wednesday. The teacher advised her to approach everything with “the confidence of the average white man,” a tip Ortega said was life-changing.
