Jack White has announced plans to file a lawsuit against Donald Trump after a member of Trump’s campaign posted a video on social media featuring Trump’s departure to Michigan and Wisconsin, accompanied by The White Stripes’ iconic track, “Seven Nation Army.”
White didn’t mince words in his Instagram post, sharing the video along with a strong message: “Oh… Don’t even think about using my music, you fascists. Lawsuit coming from my lawyers about this (to add to your 5 thousand others).”
White is the fourth prominent musician to consider legal action against Trump recently over the unauthorized use of their music. Beyoncé found herself in a similar position when a Trump campaign video featured her song “Freedom.” After she threatened to sue, the video was swiftly removed.
Additionally, both Foo Fighters and ABBA have demanded that Trump stop using their music at his campaign rallies. While Trump’s events are covered by ASCAP and BMI licenses, which generally allow the use of music, artists can opt out of these agreements. Once they do and notify the candidate, any unauthorized use can result in a $150,000 fine per violation. The estate of Isaac Hayes is currently suing Trump for $3 million over this issue.
