Per the just-released trailer teaser, we’ve also seen the first trailer for Dark Phoenix on The Late Late Show with James Corden. The release date has been set to hit theatres February 14th, 2019, having been rescheduled from November 2nd, 2018. People are speculating that the opening weekend of Sony’s Venom would be the perfect place to debut the first look at the next X-Men movie.
Black Panther opened with $242 million over its Fri-Mon Presidents Day debut and then spent the next two months making life hell for the other big releases. There have been previous mega-hit movies which pancaked the competition, like Titanic, The Sixth Sense, The Martian or Captain America: Civil War. But Black Panther put the hurt on movies (Wrinkle in Time, Pacific Rim: Uprising, Tomb Raider, Red Sparrow) that were expected to be themselves “event movies.”
The Simon Kinberg-directed sequel to X-Men: Apocalypse has been under scrutiny due both to rumors about the movie’s quality and questions as to how it will be affected by the Fox/Disney deal. Those rumors only matter if it’s closer in quality to Apocalypse than First Class. Moreover, it is without a doubt an event movie in the month of February.
While there are other big movies dropping in January, February, March and April, there is a variety alongside the court-appointed action/franchise event flick of each month. Hollywood learned from Black Panther about the dangers of year-round tentpole, scheduling and adjusted accordingly.
