Heinz is celebrating their 150th anniversary this year and their marking the grand occasion with… Ketchup Caviar.
For more than a century, Heinz Tomato Ketchup has been the jewel in Heinz’s crown, so how does their Ketchup Caviar shape up – and can it tantalize our taste buds as much as their other precious commodity? First, what is it? Well, Ketchup Caviar is small tomato ketchup pearls that open up in your mouth, giving you a burst of that signature tomato-y pizzazz. Heinz boasts that if you add this delightful bright red caviar to any kind of meal, it will turn it into a culinary experience.
The consensus from initial taste testers is mixed. Some find them to be “utterly delicious and while it’s effectively tomato ketchup, somehow it tastes a little bit lighter and looks much prettier. Best of all, if you’re a giant fan of Heinz Tomato Ketchup, you can elegantly spoon it on top of anything and everything to enhance the taste, without looking (or feeling) too greedy.”
Others, well, they say the balls keep their shape, but that “the ketchup caviar is sadly thinner and more acidic than regular Heinz, and tastes more like an own brand sauce rather than the deep, rich delights of proper glass-bottled Heinz. To get the full effect of its globular nature you have to eat it on its own, and who eats ketchup on its own?”
It’s a game attempt to reinvent the food landscape. For now, the caviar concept was just a brief social media promotion to bring attention to the company’s anniversary. But if the response continues to be overwhelming, we may just see Ketchup Caviar on store shelves soon.
