“I love the fight game. I understand this world and I understand what it is to be a woman fighting to survive,” Halle Berry shared regarding her motivation behind making her directorial debut with Bruised, a film about the intertwining of martial arts and womanhood.
The Oscar-winning actress, who also stars in the film as Jackie Justice, admitted that she thought that directing would be “too big of a role to play.” But, after some support from some persistent friends, Berry knew she would be up for the task–especially because it was a story she was passionate about. She asked herself: “Who said I can’t?”
“I was told a long time ago that if you’re going to direct a story and be a filmmaker,” the actress-turned-director said. “Especially your first movie, you best make it about something that you love and something you intrinsically understand.”
Bruised will be available for streaming on Netflix beginning November 24th.
