Flea Names Paul McCartney as the “Greatest Rock Bassist”

Flea, known for his electrifying slap bass technique and funky rhythms, has long been celebrated as one of the world’s top bass players. However, the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ bassist recently revealed the musician who, in turn, captivates him the most: Paul McCartney.

Following his performance at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games closing ceremony, Flea declared McCartney as the “greatest rock bass player.” In an interview with Team Coco, transcribed by Ultimate Guitar, Flea praised McCartney’s ability to create lyrical and melodic bass lines that stand out in the world of rock.

“I think Paul’s the greatest rock bass player. He’s just great. There are so many great players, but Paul’s bass playing is so lyrical and melodic—it’s just beautiful,” Flea remarked.

What particularly fascinates Flea is McCartney’s unconventional approach to bass. Unlike many rock bands where bass lines often serve as the foundation, McCartney would add the bass after the melody was established, creating a counter melody rather than just a rhythmic backbone. Flea cited Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band as an example of this unique technique.

Flea’s admiration for McCartney underscores his appreciation for creativity and innovation in music. Despite his own iconic status, Flea continues to find inspiration in the artistry of others, particularly in those who challenge the norms of their instruments.
