Is it any surprise that February is National Chocolate Lovers’ Month? Boxes of chocolates and truffles and piles of chocolate-covered strawberries are turning up on everyone’s’ desks these days and maybe we’ve got more reasons than ever to hoard the chocolate for ourselves. In moderation, it’s healthy! And this is even more true for Dark Chocolate, which celebrates it’s special National Food Holiday on February 1st!
No, really. Did you know that chocolate contains iron, potassium, fiber and some of our favorite antioxidants, flavonoids? It’s true! The flavonoids found in chocolate may be able to do things like relax blood vessels and promote healthy circulation, both of which may lead to healthier blood pressure levels. Chocolate also contains polyphenols, antioxidants that protect the body from free radical damage. Of course, the darker the chocolate, the healthier it is. Start with 57% cacao dark chocolate, or even semi-sweet, and work your way up until you find the perfect dark chocolate fit for you.
One way to celebrate your love of chocolate is to bake with it. Go all out with a gluten- free flourless chocolate cake. It’s super-simple to make and it tastes so darn good. Serve it with lightly sweetened whipped cream or maybe a scoop of ice cream for your special someones this Valentine’s Day. If baking isn’t your thing, try dipping! Strawberries are the classic, but you can use all sorts of fruits. Just make sure they’re absolutely dry so the chocolate sticks. If you like to drink your sugar, go for a chocolate martini or chocolate shake!
There are so many ways you can enjoy chocolate-y goodness, from puddings to cakes to cookies to candies and more. But whether you make a decadent dessert or go out and buy yourself some chocolate treats, the best way to celebrate National chocolate Lovers’ Month is to EAT SOME. And don’t forget to post on social media with #NationalChocolateLoversMonth. Bon Appetit!
