“Sultans of Swing” came from their 1978 debut LP, hitting the charts with a vengeance, peaking in the top 5 in the US, top 10 in the UK. The song almost didn’t see the light of day; Mark originally played the tune on a steel guitar in open tuning, but everything changed when he switched to his ’61 Strat.
“Skateaway” is certainly one of the sexiest videos played on MTV in 1980, the birth year of the new video channel.
“Money For Nothing” became one of the most requested songs for the MTV channel, starring Sting as the featured artist. Released in 1985, the song comes from the ‘Brothers in Arms’ LP and became the year’s most popular song. “Brothers in Arms” the other popular song from the LP was used in a Miami Vice episode, driving stronger record sales and popularity.
“Tunnel of Love” “Walk of Life” “So Far Away” and “Heavy Fuel” proved to be hits for the Straits as well.
