Now, set during the riots in 1967, ‘Detroit’ is out in the movie theaters, and the film’s soundtrack has been released by Motown Records, featuring songs from Martha & the Vandellas,’ Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, The Dramatics, Brenda Holloway, Jerry Williams, and The Devotions.
Although not shot in Detroit, KISS once filmed a movie set in the Motor City (Detroit Rock City) that featured the tunes from KISS. The movie was an ode to the band and the songs.
The Temptations had a lengthy movie about them filmed in Detroit, pulling back the curtain on the Berry Gordy experience and road of all Motown artists to make it to the top.
8 Mile in 2002 was filmed entirely in the Motor City, starring Eminem, featuring all the great tunes from the rising singer.
Beverly Hills Cop featured location shots from Detroit, and featured the songs from Glenn Frey, Harold Faltermeyer, The Pointer Sisters, Patti LaBelle, and Shalamar.
The 2005 film 4 Brothers, shot in Detroit, featured tunes from the Temptations, Jackson 5, Marvin Gaye, the Miracles, the Undisputed Truth, and Grover Washington Jr.
