A new David Bowie is reportedly in the works and has been authorized by the artist’s official estate.
The film, which is expected to include “thousands of hours of rare performance footage of the musician, most of it previously uncirculated,” will be created by Emmy-awarded winning director Brett Morgen. Montage of Heck, the 2015 Kurt Cobain documentary, is amongst Morgen’s most notable works.
According to recent reports, the Bowie film has been Morgen’s project for the past four years.
Bowie’s widow and other members of his estate have been insistent that any film about the beloved rockstar be handled with dignity.
“People say things like, ‘Your love story should be made into a movie.’ Oh, dear God, no! It’s just so private,” Man explained. “Also, it’s a family decision. It’s always a no. We always ask each other, ‘Would he do it?’ He wouldn’t. We want to honor his decision.”
While there is no official release for the documentary yet, Morgen is reportedly hoping to set a late-January release date that coincides with the six-year anniversary of Bowie’s death.
