Danny McBride and John Goodman Find Religion, and a Great Script

HBO has given the ‘green light’ to a half-hour comedy pilot that is written and stars actor Danny McBride called “The Righteous Gemstones.” The storyline is a bit off the beaten path, as it tells the story of the Gemstone televangelist family, a brand that generated a great deal of news with its wayward ways of charitable actions.

John Goodman will play the lead in the pilot, starring as the patriarch of the Gemstone family Eli Gemstone, a man who created a worldwide television network filled with all the temptations of greed and self-loathing. You might think the material wouldn’t lend itself for comedy, but executives were persuaded by the concept and potential material.

Danny McBride the creator and force behind the project is well known for his work in Hollywood, from ‘Pineapple Express’ and ‘The Angry Birds Movie’ to his television contributions to the shows ‘Chozen’ and ‘Vice Principals.’
