Christina Aguilera takes pride in the bold risks and creative decisions she’s made throughout her 25-year journey in the music industry, regardless of how they were received by the public. In a recent interview with Paper magazine, the pop superstar discussed the thoughtful intent behind her projects, emphasizing that she never released music just for the sake of gaining attention.
Aguilera highlighted her 2002 hit “Dirrty” from the Stripped album as a pivotal moment when she embraced her sexuality, marking a significant departure from her 1999 self-titled debut. “You can choose to play it safe or to shake things up and really move people,” she said. “I’ve never been interested in making noise just to stay ‘relevant’—that’s not artistry to me.”
The “Genie In A Bottle” singer explained that true artistry involves evolving and taking creative risks. “I’ve always strived to connect with my audience through music that reflects social changes and explores new ideas,” she shared. Aguilera described her 2010 album Bionic as “adventurous” and 2006’s Back to Basics as “a bit more relatable,” showcasing her versatility.
The Grammy-winning artist believes in staying true to her message and purpose, even if it means challenging public expectations. “It’s easy to play it safe, but I’ve always wanted to explore new sounds and avoid being pigeonholed,” Aguilera said. “I didn’t want to be known for just one thing—I wanted to push boundaries and keep evolving as an artist.”
