Breaking the Glass Ceiling

It’s been a man’s world since Adam and Eve, with heads of states and business being dominated by men for centuries. Well move over just a little bit Joe, as 27 women joined the ‘billionaire’ club in 2016, and plenty of women finding themselves as heads of business. Who are the most powerful women in America?

Alice Walton of the Sam Walton of the Wal-Mart business dynasty is worth $34.2 billion dollars, while daughter in-law Christy Walton comes in at $5.2 billion dollars. Jacqueline Mars (of the Mars candy family) is worth $23.4 billion, and Steve Jobs’ widow Laurene Powell Jobs is worth $16.7 billion. Abigail Johnson and Anne Cox Chambers of the Cox Media family are worth over $10 billion.

Americas proudest Fortune 500 companies GM, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, PepsiCo, Oracle, Duke Energy, and Campbell Soup all have women CEOs.

In music and entertainment Barbra Streisand is worth an estimated $340 million, Cher is worth $305 million, Lady Gaga has $220 million in the bank, and 26 year old Taylor Swift is estimated to be worth over $250 million.

In the predominantly male world of professional sports, Sarah Thomas is the NFL’s first women referee, while the NBA has one female referee, Violet Renice Palmer.
