Bigger is better and bigger is back for 2019, including big hats, big handbags, big scarves, big bows and yes, big shoulders. The big shoulders that made Joan Crawford a fashion icon in the 40’s, and had women flocking to malls to emulate Dynasty mavens in the 80’s have cycled around again and are taking over the fashion aisles for Spring 2019.
Balenciaga, Balmain, Tom Ford, Elie Saab, and Gucci all put big shoulders on everything that went down their runways from blouses to dresses to coats. This trend extended to the new “power suit,” which every designer out there seemed to have spawned at least one. Broad shoulders on suits signify a female strength we have generally always hidden. But unlike previous seasons, which forced a masculine silhouette on us, this season’s suits seem more decidedly feminine, even with the strong shoulder.
Today’s big shoulder has an elegance and sophistication that makes you feel like you’re looking to the future, rather than copying the past.
