Berry Gordon and Kim Weston in Our Motown Minute

It’s time for another Motown minute…

In 1959, Berry Gordy borrowed start-up money from an uncle and started a record company out of his home on Grand Boulevard in downtown Detroit. His boxing career wasn’t taking off, so he figured he’d do something else with his life. Nearly a billion dollars later, the Motown Sound continues to fil the airwaves with your favorite songs.

You can’t properly celebrate the Motown Sound without recognizing the women of Motown, and Kim Weston was a valuable actress in this Motown play.

Agatha Nathalia Weston, or Kim Weston, was a native Detroiter having grown up downtown, signing in 1961 with her first solo song “Take Me In Your Arm (Rock Me a Little While).” Yes, the original version was covered by the Doobie Brothers decades later. She will always be known for her Marvin Gaye duet “It Takes Two.” Kim enjoyed moderate solo success, but a dispute over royalties and feeling that she was playing second fiddle resulted in her leaving Motown records in 1967.
