AC/DC’s ‘Back In Black’ Climbs to Third Best-Selling Album in U.S. History

AC/DC’s iconic album Back In Black has reached a monumental milestone in music history. On August 21st, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) certified the 1980 release as 27-times platinum, signifying over 27 million units sold in the United States alone. This achievement propels the hard rock classic past the Eagles’ Hotel California, securing its position as the third highest-selling album in U.S. history.

The top spot remains held by the Eagles with their compilation album Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975), boasting an impressive 38 million units sold. Following closely is Michael Jackson’s legendary Thriller, which has achieved 34 million sales in the U.S.

The global impact of Back In Black is equally remarkable. With an estimated 50 million copies sold worldwide, AC/DC’s masterpiece stands as the second best-selling album across the globe, trailing only behind Thriller, which has amassed approximately 70 million units in international sales.

Originally released over four decades ago, Back In Black continues to resonate with fans new and old, solidifying AC/DC’s legacy in the annals of rock history. This latest certification underscores the album’s enduring popularity and influence, reaffirming its status as a timeless classic that continues to captivate listeners around the world.
