Kacey Musgraves Please for Police to Stop Using Rubber Bullets on Protesters

Of more that 800,000 people who’ve signed a Change.org petition urging police to ban the use of rubber bullets, Kacey Musgraves signed her name on the dotted line.

The petition reads, “There have been various occurrences where peaceful protesters have been shot with rubber bullets by the police, despite them doing nothing wrong to begin with. Multiple people have been majorly injured from these rubber bullets!” You can sign the petition here.

A number of protesters and journalists have posted about being hit by the projectiles, as well as Halsey, who said she was hit with rubber bullets while protesting on Saturday in Los Angeles.

“We were peaceful hands up not moving not breaching the line. they opened fire of rubber bullets and tear gas multiple times on us. citizens who were not provoking them,” she wrote alongside images of police in protective gear holding batons as they advanced on marchers. Halsey was part of one of the hundreds of peaceful protests that have taken place across the nation over the past week in honor of George Floyd.

Police using rubber bullets can kill, blind or maim victims for life. A 2017 study found that 3% of people hit by the large projectiles considered “non-lethal” by police departments died of their injuries, while 15% of the nearly 2,000 people studied were permanently injured by the objects known as “kinetic impact projectiles.” – per Kaiser Health News

“Most of us were simply begging them to have empathy. to reconsider. to consider humanity and our nations history and future,” she continued. “They opened fire multiple times. I was hit twice. Once by pellets and once by shrapnel. We were gassed repeatedly for hours.”
