Who Wore What on the 2020 Golden Globes Red Carpet

Celebrities, to their credit, took some big swings on the Golden Globes 2020 red carpet. Some swings resulted in home runs, others struck out at the plate.  The largest trend, both literally and figuratively, was dramatic sleeves, a look worn by everyone from Jodie Comer to Olivia Coleman to Cate Blanchett.

Another big trend on display, and we do mean on display, was skin, dahling, and lots of it.  From Salma Hayek’s impressive, uh, golden globes practically bursting out of the top of her dress to Kerry Washington’s strategically placed center jewels inside her peekaboo tuxedo coat to Gwyneth Paltrow’s sheer, abs-of-steel-revealing maxi dress.

Then there were the sparkles, from Sairose Ronan’s subtle chain-mail number to Ana de Armas’ midnight blue strapless ball gown to Cynthia Erivo’s reputed $5 Million hand-beaded black and white figure-hugging dress (okay, so $3M of that was the Bulgari necklace she wore, but still), these ladies were shiny, shiny.

Some wore asymmetry well, as with Gillian Anderson and Michelle Williams, and some decided to come out looking positively delicious in sorbet confections like Tiffany Hadish, Priyanka Chopra (both wearing delightful bright pink that highlighted their skin tones), Zoey Deutch (lemon yellow) and Michelle Williams (who knew orange sherbet could look so good)?

Then there were the men, and women dressed like men, who decided to eschew the traditional tuxedo for a bright, bold color scheme (Nicholas Braun and Wesley Snipes), or shimmer and sheer (Phoebe Waller-Bridge and director Lulu Wang).

Some chose to just go all out, with mixed results.  Billy Porter dazzled with his all white ensemble and impossibly long feathered train.  Jennifer Lopez went out and over the top with her ginormous shiny green and gold bow, making her look more like a forgotten Christmas present than the va-va-voom star she is.  And then there was Rooney Mara, apparently vying for the Bjork, “she wore what now?” award.

Whether you loved or hated them, the fashions at this year’s Golden Globes certainly made us curious to see what’s going to be coming next in the 2020 awards season.
