On Thursday night, May 16th, one of Halsey’s fans tweeted at the pop singer “I could really use [an] angry anthem right now,” a few hours before her new single, “Nightmare,” was unveiled. Halsey quote-tweeted the statement and promptly replied, “Well boy do I have a song for you.” And she definitely wasn’t kidding. “I’m tired and angry, but somebody should be,” Halsey spits, letting others know that the general frustration they might be feeling is validated by women everywhere.
“Nightmare” is Halsey’s first solo single since her No. 1 hit “Without Me.” The anthem truly harnesses that breakup song’s raw personal hurt and swells it into a universal outrage. “Angry” doesn’t do “Nightmare” justice — in the song, Halsey is furious about the state of the world around her, about the messages that she is bombarded with every day (typically from men), often regarding her self-worth or physical presence.
What makes this anthem so important is that Halsey wanted to write a song about what it’s like to be a woman in the year 2019, and “Nightmare” makes its rage plain and its conclusion that this, the current state, is not good enough.
