Multifunctional Furniture

With hot trends like downsizing and tiny living poised to dominate in 2019, it’s no wonder that multifunctional furniture is, and will continue to be all the rage in the new year. Living in a smaller house isn’t just popular with the elderly after they enter retirement, but young couples are also looking for smaller homes, which naturally brings them to reconsider their furniture choices.

“Life feels uncertain and chaotic right now. We are hearing more and more that our clients want to simplify their homes and interiors. To that end we believe we will be seeing more multifunctional furniture in 2019, like this chair and drink table combination from BDDW,” says interior designer Kristen Pena.

Design shouldn’t only look pretty — it should also solve a problem, and one problem that plagues a lot of people is how to make the most of their space (think combo coat/shoe racks for the entryway). Here are a few multitasking home furnishings that may help take the bite out of living in smaller domeciles.
You might think that living in a small space means letting go of luxury items like full sized mirrors and closet space, but hold on, cabinet mirrors are here! With a standing cabinet mirror, you can have both. The secret of this piece is that the mirror can open, much like a closet door, where you can store not just clothes, but jewelry and other smaller items you need to keep within easy reach. And when it comes to aesthetics, bear in mind that a mirror actually adds more light, which is super important in a smaller space.

The adjustable overbed desk just might be the ultimate winner when it comes to design trends for 2019. Not only does it serve as a work desk that hovers over your bed, but because you can roll it, it can stand by a wall and be used as a shelf, which means it gives extra storage space and can be used in any room. But the reason most people fall in love with this item in no time is that it allows them to stay in bed. No matter how big or small your bed is, you can adjust the desk to any size and height, and get all the work done from the comfort of your happy place. The overbed desk can be made of wood, steel or any other sturdy material for that matter, so you can choose the one that fits best with your style.

Storage is always at a premium in small spaces, so things like ottomans, storage benches and lift-up coffee tables are fantastic places to tuck away linens, books and miscellaneous items that tend to clutter up a home. Or heck, turn your bed into a cozy storage unit by building shelving into your headboard, or getting a platform bed with drawers underneath so you don’t have to try to cram everything into a small closet or find room for a dresser.
