What to Wear When Traveling Over the Holidays

The traveling part of getting to your final destination is never fun, especially during the holiday whammy between Thanksgiving and New Year’s. You already have so much on your plate this time of year with work, get-togethers, and other events, and then you get to the airport. The lines tend to be longer, the crowds tend to be bigger, and the flights are much fuller than usual, which means that there is much more of an opportunity for things to go so very wrong. You can, however, make the journey less stressful just by choosing the right travel wardrobe.

Remember, we normal folk are not Beyonce or a Kardashian. We do not need to prepare for an assemblage of paparazzi waiting to shoot up at us from the tarmac. But we can take tips from the travel style of not just off-duty models, celebrities and royalty, but also bloggers, social media stars, and normal, real-life people just trying to survive the trip. After all, we just need to sit in one place for an extended period of time without experiencing incredible discomfort due to our clothing choices.

First, to prepare for the temperature roulette that is inherent in travel, you’ll need layers. Be a practical packer. You’ll need versatile pieces that you can reuse throughout your trip. Pack shoes and clothes you’ve already road-tested and know to be comfortable for your body and your being.

You’ll need just five things:

  • A T-Shirt (during frigid Winter travel, you may want to consider a long-sleeve or turtleneck, depending on how you handle the cold) — one that’s soft, well-made, and loose fitting.
  • A Jacket or Cardigan sweater— something neutral and warm, easy to take on and off.
  • Fitted Pants with Stretch — look for stretchy denim is great, or even stylish yoga pants.       Don’t get sloppy with sweats, and stay away from bright colors and crazy patterns – they’re not versatile and show all the mistakes you make during your travels.
  • Comfortable, Stylish Shoes — cool sneakers, low heels or flats. You could go for a low boot, too, but remember, you’re going to have to remove them at the airport, and might want to on the plane.
  • One Signature Accessory — a little something extra to make it feel more “you.”

Chances are you’ll never remember what you wore on any given trip, but the comfort and confidence that come from the perfect travel outfit are meaningful. Your style can change your approach to what you do and who you are abroad.
