Aquaman Makes a Splash in China

Warner Bros. Pictures’ Aquaman generated approximately RMB 70 million during its opening weekend in nearly 600 IMAX® theatres in China, setting a new IMAX record for the best opening weekend in Q4 and December. The film set additional IMAX records including the biggest IMAX China opening ever for a Warner Bros and DC title. IMAX represented a significant share of the market with 18 of the top 20 locations in China.

“Congratulations to our friends at Warner Bros. Pictures, DC Comics, director James Wan and Jason Momoa on Aquaman’s success in China,” said Greg Foster, CEO of IMAX Entertainment and Senior Executive Vice President, IMAX Corp. “The incredible underwater world and massive scope and scale of this film are being enthusiastically embraced by Chinese moviegoers, particularly through the immersive IMAX experience. We are confident that Aquaman’s strong word of mouth and growing momentum will lead to a continued successful run in China and other regions of the world.”

The Jason Momoa-starring superhero film also generated effusive word of mouth from audiences across China and more than half of the movie was presented in IMAX’s exclusive expanded aspect ratio with up to 26% more picture, only in IMAX.

The IMAX® 3D release of Aquaman was also digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience® with proprietary IMAX DMR® (Digital Re-mastering) technology. The crystal-clear images, coupled with IMAX’s customized theatre geometry and powerful digital audio, create a unique environment that will make audiences feel as if they are in the movie.
