Steven Spielberg wants to find the next Maria, the up and coming Tony, and lots of Jets and Sharks. He’s begun working with 20th Century Fox to find the players via social media for his take on the legendary book, play and film ‘West Side Story.’
Hollywood seems to be reaching back these days, turning retro in its choice for projects and upcoming biopics. Earlier we’ve learned that Jennifer Hudson will portray Aretha Franklin in an upcoming film, and Tom Hanks will begin working on a biopic about Mister Rogers. We now hear that Steven Spielberg is creating a new film adaptation of West Side Story.
The original Broadway play and subsequent film ‘West Side Story’ earned a Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize for playwright Tony Kushner, based on New York City’s West Side in the mid-50s. The film adapted the incredible music of legendary Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, winning 10 Academy Awards, turning into a coming out party or Natalie Wood.
