Most everyone can name Seattle or San Francisco as influential rock and roll cities, but did you know that there were significant urban centers in the middle of America that proved to be rocking? Check out these cities of rock and why we consider them to be a big part of the rock and roll fabric…

Athens Georgia is/was the home of James Brown, R.E.M., the Black Crowes, and The Atlanta Rhythm Section. Collective Soul and Shawn Mullins also hail from Atlanta.

Minneapolis brought us the incomparable Prince. Jacksonville gave us 38 Special, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet, and most of the Allman Brothers. Tom Petty came from Gainesville, the Outlaws from Tampa, and Jim Morrison was born in Clearwater.

Finally, Philadelphia became the home of a reprise of Motown with its ‘Philly Sound’ but gave the world rockers like Hall and Oates, Todd Rundgren, Joan Jett and the Hooters.
