Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Nominee Dire Straits

Last week the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland Ohio announced its 2018 nominees list, which included 19 deserving artists, nine nominated for the very first time.

One of the nominees is the British super group Dire Straits. Dire Straits the band was born in 1977 in Deptford London, driven by founding members and real brothers, Mark and David Knopfler.

Dire Straits has sold over 100 million albums, earning some of the highest awards in the UK and USA, including four Grammy awards. Their single “Money for Nothing” in the mid-80s (right at the height of the MTV Video days) hit number one on four music charts across the world, featuring Sting and the classic opening guitar riff from Mark.

The other memorable singles from the band include “Sultans of Swing,””Walk of Life,” “So Far Away,” and “Brothers in Arms,” which was featured in an episode of Miami Vice in the mid-80s. The band disbanded in 1995 with little chance of getting back together for a reunion tour or album.

Next year’s Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place April 14, 2018, in Cleveland, Ohio.
