Matt Stafford Becomes Highest Paid Player in NFL

Matt Stafford and the Detroit Lions have been discussing an extension for some time now and just over a week from the season starting they have agreed to a new deal. This contract extension makes Stafford the highest paid player in the NFL, earning him $27 million per year for five years.

Derek Carr of the Oakland Raiders signed a contract last month that gave him $25 million per year, but it was only a matter of time before someone outdid his contract. The Lions were essentially left no choice in paying the man as quarterbacks are hard to come by and Stafford has proven he’s able to lead his team.

In the contract, he has been given a $50 million signing bonus with another $42 million in guaranteed money. The Detroit Lions are certainly happy to go into the 2017 season with their star quarterback signed for many years to come.
