It’s been over a year since we lost rock icon David Bowie; he must be smiling in heaven given all the awards he’s been winning in recent ceremonies. His last LP in 2016 has been recognized as one of his best works of art, although he never lived long enough to reap the harvest of his efforts.
A few weeks ago it was announced that a crowd funding effort has begun to raise money to create a David Bowie memorial, to be placed in his hometown of Brixton, London. David Robert Jones was born in Brixton in 1947, and as his musical career began to take off, it occurred to him that he would have to change his name from David Jones to David Bowie to avoid confusion with another Davy Jones, of the pop sensation Monkees.
Did you know that he was relatively unknown in the US until the BBC used his song “Space Oddity” to commemorate the moon landing? Did you know that David shared the same birthday at Elvis (12 years later) or that he has twice been nominated for the honor of ‘Knight’ by the Queen, yet turned the award down each time?
Ziggy Stardust will live forever; David Bowie’s music will be eternally remembered.
