Joni Sledge of Sister Sledge is Gone

The news of her death won’t cause people to talk at the water cooler, nor will it lead the NBC Nightly News, but we’re saddened to hear that Joni Sledge, one of the Sledge sisters (“We Are Family”) died earlier this week at the age of 60. Joni was found in her Phoenix home over the weekend, cause of death natural causes.

Joni was born in Philly in 1957, daughter to Florez Sledge and Broadway performer Edwin Sledge. You might say she was destined to be an entertainer.

Sister Sledge rose to the top of the charts and popularity with their signature song, a 1979 Grammy-nominated tune, “We Are Family,” written by Chic’s Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers. The song became the anthem of family reunions, weddings and the Pittsburgh Pirates during their 1979 championship season
