21 years ago this week the longest running hit on the Billboard Hot 100 was released. The song was “One Sweet Day” and came from Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men. It was one heck of a hit and would last 16 weeks at the number one position on the chart!
It was November 14, 1995 that the hit would be released off of her album, “Daydream.” “One Sweet Day” wasn’t just a one-chart wonder though. It would reach number one nine different charts including those in Canada, New Zealand, the UK and the United States.
This hit from Mariah would end up winning five awards in total from the following award shows: Billboard Music Awards, Blockbuster Entertainment Awards, BMI Pop Music Awards and ASCAP Awards.
One interesting tidbit about the song is that no real music video was made for the hit. A music video was thrown together just to have one, but both Mariah and Boyz II Men’s schedules were so busy that they could not find time to put a real video together. Mariah has stated that she’s happy one never came about because it’s lyrical message was so strong that she didn’t think it was possible for a music video to capture its message.
