The Allman Brothers (Macon, GA) need to be considered the top southern band of all time, generating amazing interest and record sales from the late 60s through the 70s. Tragedy and triumph has always defined this five-man band. Dickey Betts “Blue Sky” alone makes this southern band the winner and still champion of this wonderful genre.
The late Duane Allman dropped out of high school to focus on being a guitar virtuoso. Not long after he went to a B.B. King show and was hooked on the music, determined to start his own band. His humble beginnings were that of a studio session guitarist, working with a recording on many soul albums, including Wilson Pickett. Find a copy of Pickett’s “Hey Jude’ and you’ll hear Duane on guitar.
Honorary mentions for southern rock icons are Blackfoot (Jacksonville, FL) The Black Crowes (Marietta, GA) Zack Brown Band (Atlanta, GA), Tommy Shaw (Montgomery, AL)
