America celebrates its the Fourth of July today with parades, fireworks displays, concerts, great food, and lots of beers. We know that the good ole U.S.A. is a winning theme for music of all types, so let’s check out the best patriotic songs of our time…
Miley Cyrus and her song “Party In the U.S.A” from 2009 is a great song, the video pays homage to the movie ‘Grease,’ a film Miley references as a watershed moment for her parents.
“America” by Neil Diamond is a smash July 4th hit from the 1980 ‘Jazz Singer’ album, perfectly presenting the sound of honor and old glory.
“Philadelphia Freedom” by Elton John was written for his gal pal Billy Jean King and her pro tennis team based in Philadelphia.
“America” by Simon and Garfunkel is the ultimate 70s progressive song about America. The song was written by the duo as they traveled the country doing cheap gigs, living on a string at a time of their lives when they got along and loved their journey.
Although primarily a country song, artist Bra Paisley brings the red white and blue closer to our hearts with his song “American Saturday Night.” You don’t have to be a country fan to appreciate the tone and message of this tune.
“Born in the USA” by Bruce Springsteen is the ultimate July 4th song, heard on the radio and on the streets this hallowed day. The song comes from the album of the same name; the lyrics directly put into words the frustration of soldiers coming back from the Vietnam War, its misgivings and empty promise of healing.
“Living in the USA” is a song made hit by multiple artists including the Steve Miller Band, Linda Ronstadt, Chuck Berry and more. The song is short, sweet and to the point.
Lee Greenwood was a moderately successful country singer until he hit the charts bit time with the song ‘God Bless the USA” in 1984. Lee was born in Los Angeles but grew up in Sacramento. He’s currently married to his fourth wife, Kimberley Payne a former Miss Tennessee.
“R.O.C.K. in the USA” by John Mellencamp is a 1985 patriotic song that helped solidify John with fans from rock and pop.
Honorable mentions today include “Living in America” by James Brown, “American Pie” by Don McLean, The Guess Who’s “American Woman,” and Toby Keith’s “American Soldier.”
