OMG if we see that GEICO commercial with the song from Europe “The Final Countdown” one more time – yikes! What’s up with that song and Europe? Well, did you now that Europe is a Swedish band? Yup, they formed in 1979, and had to phonetically sing English songs because the boys couldn’t speak a lick of English in the beginning.
The song “The Final Countdown” was actually inspired by David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” and written to be an extension of Major Tom’s travels. The song was recorded, and was often the case, set aside and not released because the boys in the band didn’t think it would ever be a hit. The record company convinced them to release the song as a single, and as they say the rest is rock and roll history.
Due largely to the popularity of the GEICO TV commercial, Europe has gotten back together and is planning a tour in 2016. The tour is designed to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the album “The Final Countdown”. Thanks GEICO!
