The theme song from the smash sit-com ‘Friends’ is “I’ll Be There for You” by the Rembrandts, still popular today, always linked to the biggest show in the 90s. Danny Wilde from Los Angeles and Phil from Minneapolis had previous and commercial studio work, but this song made them famous. It also made them crazy, splitting up in 1997.
Sometimes one hit wonders can grate on your nerves (the Macarena comes to mind) and the tune “Mambo number five) from Lou Bega in 1999 is a classic example. The song was actually written and made regionally famous by Perez Pardo in 1949. Did you know that Lou was born, raised, and hit the charts from Munich Germany? Yup, not New Orleans as you might have thought.
“Steal My Sunshine” by Len was a light, cute, and rip off song from a song in the 70s called “More More More” the Andrea True Connection, but who’s asking? Canadian siblings Marc and Sharon Costanzo made it big in 1999 with this song, then couldn’t find the magic again.
‘Haddaway’ gave us the song “What is Love” that not only had chart success in 1993, but stole the show in the Will Ferrell/Chris Kattan film “Night at the Roxbury” and used in many a ‘SNL’ skit. We hear it also makes a great ringtone.
