One Hit Wonders We Love to Hear

In the mid-80s a fabulous song from a two person group called ‘Boy Meets Girl’ hit the charts with a catchy song called ‘Waiting for a Star to Fall.” Their song is one of the best examples of what we call a ‘One hit wonder.’ These are songs that had their 15 minutes of fame from a lucky singer or band, disappearing into the night, never to be heard from again.

Here is part one of “One Hit Wonders We Love to Hear.”

“Waiting for a Star to Fall” from ‘Boy Meets Girl’ became the only hit from George Merrill and Shannon Rubicam, Seattle singers that were sang at a local wedding then wed themselves a year later. The real success of these two songwriters is they wrote both “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” and “How Will I Know” for Whitney Houston. That is big in anyone’s opinion.

“Breakfast at Tiffany’s” by Deep Blue Something hit the charts in the 90s. This Denton, TX band driven by brothers Toby and Todd Pipes sued their label after the song then went into the night never to be heard from again.

The Force MDs had a big hit with the piano driven ballad ‘Tender Love’ in the mid-80s. Force MDs (Musical Diversity) were discovered singing in Times Square, but stayed viable for only a few years. Three of the four members died in the 90s, one by heart attack, Lou Gehrig Disease, and natural causes.
