Harry Wayne “K.C.” Casey was born in 1951 in Hialeah, Florida. As a young man Harry worked in a record store while working off hours as a part time musician. Yearning to be famous., K.C decided to go for broke forming ‘KC & The Sunshine Junkanoo Band’ with other employees of the record store. The rest is music history.
K.C. and the Sunshine Band gave us “Get Down Tonight,” “I’m you’re Boogie Man,” “That’s the Way I Like It,” and more. Because of K.C’s studio expertise, the songs sound as fresh and highly produced as the day they were recorded.
A revival of the Disco music genre gave K.C. a reason to come out of retirement, adding new members of the band. The band then toured the country again until the magic turned into drudgery. Sadly, the original guitarist Jerome Smith died while operating a bulldozer on a construction site.
In 2012, the Sunlife Insurance created a commercial that parodied the band; they were not amused. The madness didn’t stop there as the insurance company guaranteed to back the band financially if they would agree to change their name to ‘K.C, and the Sunlife Band.’ Thankfully, the generous offer was declined.
