Actress and activist Eva Longoria has recently opened up about her decision to move her family outside the United States, expressing concern over the direction of the country. In an interview, Longoria revealed that she, her husband José Bastón, and their six-year-old son Santiago are now spending much of their time in Spain and Mexico City. The move comes as Longoria navigates a new chapter of her career, hosting international mini-series for CNN, and as she contemplates the growing challenges in America.
Leaving Los Angeles Behind
Longoria’s decision to leave Los Angeles, where she spent her entire adult life, was gradual. Even before the pandemic, she noticed shifts in the city that made her feel increasingly unsettled. “I had my whole adult life here,” she shared. “But the vibe was different. And then Covid happened, and it pushed it over the edge.” Citing issues such as rising homelessness and high taxes, she made it clear that her move wasn’t a condemnation of California but rather a personal choice reflecting a shift in her life’s direction.
Longoria acknowledges her privilege in being able to relocate. “I get to escape and go somewhere. Most Americans aren’t so lucky. They’re going to be stuck in this dystopian country, and my anxiety and sadness is for them,” she admitted.
Responding to a New Political Landscape
Longoria’s concerns intensified after the recent presidential election, which saw Donald Trump secure a second term in office, defeating opponent Kamala Harris. Longoria, an outspoken supporter of Harris, expressed her disappointment and unease at the outcome. “The shocking part is not that he won. It’s that a convicted criminal who spews so much hate could hold the highest office,” she said.
Despite the election results, Longoria remains committed to her activism, stating, “I would like to think our fight continues.” She added that if Trump’s policies are implemented, “America is going to be a scary place.”
Calls for Continued Resistance
In the wake of the election, Longoria is not alone in voicing her concerns. Actress Jamie Lee Curtis took to social media to share her fears for the future. She wrote about the potential loss of rights, particularly for minority and LGBTQ+ communities, and warned that women’s reproductive healthcare could face further restrictions. Curtis encouraged Americans to remain vigilant and proactive, urging, “Fight against tyranny, one day at a time. One protest at a time. That’s what it means to be an American.”
Longoria’s New Chapter
While Longoria’s move reflects a personal decision, it also underscores her commitment to advocating for positive change from a distance. As she settles in her new homes in Spain and Mexico City, she’s embracing this shift as a way to stay active in her causes while navigating a fresh start with her family.
