If you can’t bear leaving your pet at home, Lyft now lets you bring your furry friend along and helps you match with a pet-friendly driver. As PC Mag reports, Uber has offered a pet optionĀ since 2021, but prior to the new Pet ride option in the app, Lyft riders had to order a car and hope that the driver was okay with pets.
This is how it works: you open the Lyft app and simply choose a “Pet ride.” Then the ride-hailing service will connect you with a driver who doesn’t mind animal passengers. The service is an extra $4 plus tax, but Lyft says that the additional fee goes directly to the driver.
There don’t appear to be any special rules, although Lyft does recommend that pets ride with you on a blanket, in a carrier, or at your feet as a courtesy to the driver and their car. Drivers still have to accommodate passengers with a service animal even if they don’t opt for a Pet ride.
Drivers who don’t want to accommodate pets can opt out of Pet rides. On Reddit, reaction was mixed; some said they would immediately opt out while others were happy to have them.
“When I did Uber I opted in for pets,” one driver wrote. “The dogs were always super well behaved and I got to give the fur baby love on the ride. I know some people don’t want animals in their vehicles but I don’t care about mine because my dogs already ride in it.”
