Weezer Faces Setbacks with SZNZ EPs Box Set and Broadway Residency

Weezer will always be able to tour on their early albums, especially with their iconic Blue Album, which they’re celebrating with a 30th-anniversary tour featuring the Flaming Lips and Dinosaur Jr. However, the band’s more recent projects haven’t seen the same success. The ambitious SZNZ EPs from 2022, which were planned to be released as a box set, have met a disappointing end, much like their canceled Broadway residency.

Throughout 2022, Weezer released four EPs under the SZNZ banner, each one dropping at the start of a new season. These EPs were set to be celebrated with a unique Broadway mini-residency, but low ticket sales led to its cancellation. The band had also promised a comprehensive SZNZ box set, which fans eagerly awaited. Unfortunately, that too has been scrapped.

The news of the box set’s cancellation was confirmed last Friday by Weezer’s assistant and webmaster on the Weezerpedia Discord server. When a fan inquired about the status of the box set, the assistant, Koch, responded, “ok official word: i just learned the SZNZ box was in fact cancelled, im sorry to confirm. Apparently high cost vs. not expecting enough sales to make it work. Feels kinda like the Broadway cancel thing… just letting SZNS be ‘as is’, and enjoy.” He hinted that there might still be hope for a future release, possibly as a special Record Store Day edition.

Despite these setbacks, Weezer continues to forge ahead, relying on the strength of their early catalog to keep their tour dates vibrant and exciting for their fans. While the SZNZ EPs might not get the grand celebration initially planned, they remain a unique part of Weezer’s expansive discography, waiting for a time when they might be rediscovered and celebrated anew.
