Bebe Rexha, the “Say My Name” singer and acclaimed songwriter, unleashed a scathing critique of the music industry in a series of posts on X (formerly known as Twitter) on Tuesday. Rexha, 34, who has penned hits for artists like Eminem, Selena Gomez, Tyler Hubbard, and Nick Jonas, voiced her frustrations and vowed to expose the industry’s darker side if changes aren’t made.
Rexha, who has been signed to Warner Records since the start of her career, claimed she could “bring down a BIG chunk of this industry.” She lamented being undermined and silenced, despite being aware of the issues around her. “I AM frustrated. I have been UNDERMINED. I’ve been so quiet for the longest time,” Rexha wrote. “Things must change or I’m telling ALL of my truths. The good, the bad, and the ugly.”
When a fan asked “what happened again,” Rexha responded, “Again? You haven’t even heard 5 percent. You have NO IDEA.” Another fan referenced the time her name was removed from the song “Hey Mama,” to which Rexha replied, “My love. That? Compared to all the other stuff you don’t know about? That’s child’s play.”
“Hey Mama,” a 2015 hit by David Guetta, was co-written by Rexha but did not initially credit her for vocals, a situation that has since been rectified. When questioned about why she hadn’t spoken out earlier, Rexha explained, “THEY PUNISH YOU.”
Addressing speculation that her outburst was a marketing ploy for her latest single, “I’m The Drama,” Rexha denied having any promotional budget, asserting, “Marketing? I have no budget for that. IM FED UP.”
Rexha did not disclose the specific source of her discontent but assured fans of her appreciation for their support. “This is not just coming from a place of anger. It’s sadness,” she shared. “I’m sitting in my hotel room in London crying my eyes out. I’ve felt hopeless for the longest time. I’ve been walking a lot through this city and meeting fans, and they have really ignited something inside of me.”
As the posts gained attention, Rexha’s candid revelations have sparked conversations about the treatment of artists within the music industry, highlighting the ongoing struggles they face behind the scenes.
