Sean “Diddy” Combs Returns New York’s Key to the City Amid Assault Allegations

Sean “Diddy” Combs has returned New York’s Key to the City after a request from Mayor Eric Adams, following the emergence of disturbing video evidence of Combs allegedly assaulting his ex-girlfriend, Cassie, in 2016. The footage, which surfaced earlier this month, showed Combs physically attacking Cassie in a hotel hallway, aligning with details she had previously disclosed in a federal lawsuit.

Mayor Adams had awarded Combs the key in September, celebrating his contributions to the music industry and his philanthropic efforts. However, the recent revelation of the security footage compelled Adams to act swiftly. The video, obtained by CNN, captured a distressing scene from March 2016: Combs trailing a woman near an elevator, violently grabbing her, throwing her to the ground, kicking her, and dragging her by her sweatshirt.

In a formal letter sent to Combs’ representatives, Adams expressed his deep disturbance upon viewing the footage. “I strongly condemn these actions and stand in solidarity with all survivors of domestic and gender-based violence,” he wrote. The letter emphasized the city’s commitment to supporting survivors and making their voices heard.

The Mayor’s office sent the letter on June 4 to addresses for Combs in both Los Angeles and New York City. Six days later, the key was officially returned to the city, symbolizing a clear stance against violence and reinforcing the administration’s dedication to upholding justice and dignity for all residents.

This turn of events highlights the city’s resolve in addressing domestic violence and supporting those affected, even when it involves high-profile figures. Combs’ return of the key reflects the serious repercussions of his actions and the ongoing commitment of New York City to hold individuals accountable, regardless of their status.
