David Byrne and Devo Revive “Empire” for Noise For Now Vol. 2 to Support Abortion Access

David Byrne and Devo have unearthed a hidden gem from their archives to support a critical cause. Their previously unreleased track “Empire” has been included in the newly announced compilation album Noise For Now Vol. 2. The album, which aims to raise funds for abortion access and reproductive rights, features contributions from a diverse lineup of artists, and will be released both digitally and on limited-edition vinyl on June 21.

“Empire” was originally recorded during the sessions for Devo’s 1997 album Feelings but didn’t make it onto the final tracklist. Reflecting on its revival, Byrne described the song as “an ironic capitalist fascist anthem” that felt too “mean and caustic” for its initial release. “Well, times change, and it certainly resonates now in ways it maybe didn’t then,” Byrne said. He praised the collaboration with Devo, noting that they “knew exactly what the song is about.”

Devo’s Gerald Casale echoed Byrne’s sentiments, adding, “We were on board working with the dark satire of David Byrne’s ‘Empire’ over 30 years ago. The song was prescient and we got it. Now it can be heard!”

The compilation, produced by the nonprofit organization Noise for Now, marks a significant cultural moment by connecting music with activism. Alongside Byrne and Devo, the album features contributions from a variety of artists including Courtney Barnett, The War On Drugs, Faye Webster, and Big Freedia. This project coincides with the second anniversary of the Supreme Court’s controversial decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, a landmark ruling that had protected abortion rights in the United States for nearly half a century.

Proceeds from the album will support independent abortion providers and organizations focused on reproductive health, rights, and justice. Specifically, 90% of the funds raised will go directly to these crucial services, amplifying the impact of the artists’ contributions.

With its blend of musical innovation and social commitment, Noise For Now Vol. 2 not only celebrates the power of music but also underscores its potential as a force for social change. Fans of Byrne, Devo, and the other contributing artists can anticipate a compelling compilation that honors their favorite artists while supporting a vital cause.
