Rock Legends Rally Behind Steve Marriott’s Family in AI Voice Controversy

Several iconic musicians, including Robert Plant, Peter Frampton, David Gilmour, and Bryan Adams, are supporting the family of the late Steve Marriott in their opposition to the use of AI-generated versions of his voice in new recordings. Marriott, known for his roles in Humble Pie and Small Faces, was a celebrated vocalist who passed away in 1991. His induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame attests to his profound influence on music.

Marriott’s third wife, Toni Poulton, has reportedly authorized the use of these AI-generated recordings for a new album. However, Marriott’s children, led by Mollie Marriott, are firmly against this move. Mollie contends that such technology-driven projects would tarnish her father’s legacy, arguing that it is motivated by profit rather than artistic appreciation.

The support from Marriott’s peers and contemporaries underscores the depth of respect for his vocal talent and the concern over preserving the integrity of his work. Despite the estate’s current lack of confirmed plans to proceed with AI recordings, the situation remains contentious, with the managing director dismissing Mollie Marriott’s concerns. This controversy highlights the broader ethical debates surrounding posthumous use of AI in the music industry.
