Geddy Lee Unveils Lost Demos Reflecting on Neil Peart’s Tragedy and Personal Relationships

Geddy Lee, the renowned frontman of Rush, has shared a poignant glimpse into his creative process with the release of two demos from his 2000 solo project, “My Favorite Headache.” The demos, including a track titled “Gone,” poignantly address the tragic loss of Neil Peart’s daughter, Selena Taylor, in a car accident in 1997.

In a heartfelt interview with Q104.3, Lee revealed that “Gone” was written as a reflection on the sudden loss of a loved one. Initially shelved out of respect for Peart’s grieving process, Lee found the song too personal and raw for release at the time.

Accompanying “Gone” is another track, “I Am… You Are,” inspired by the complexities of Lee’s relationship with his wife. This song, too, was deemed too intimate for the public ear initially.

Last year, Lee rediscovered these tracks and was inspired to revisit them. Working with Rush collaborator Ben Mink, they added new drums and a violin solo to the original guitars and vocals, breathing new life into these lost gems.

These releases, now aptly named “the lost demos,” showcase Lee’s introspective songwriting and his journey through personal and shared grief, providing fans a deeper understanding of his artistic soul.
