Madeline is seven years old, lives in California, and is absolutely obsessed with unicorns. According to her it is their magical horn that makes them special and said, “It grants you magic wishes if you ask.” She enjoys them so much that she decided she wanted one of her own and wrote to her county’s animal control department in order to ask for permission to have her very own unicorn in her backyard if she was able to find one.
Just last month, Los Angeles County officials gave in, and issued her the first ever unicorn license. Madeline told CBS News that, “I think I’ve learned if you want something, then you have to ask for it, And to ask for it, you have to do something to ask for it.”
Madeline has loved unicorns ever since she learned of them at the age of three and is able to tell you anything you want to know about them, even how to take care of one. She says that it is important that your unicorn is able to see rainbows, sunlight, and moonbeams. She added, “so I’m going to make the barn have a glass roof.” Madeline also said that unicorns live in the magical forest of Scotland.
Apparently the idea for writing a letter to the L.A. County about owning a unicorn was Madeline’s mom’s suggestion due to her wanting her daughter to learn the rules of owning a large animal through writing to the Los Angeles County’s Department of Animal Care and Control.
When L.A. County shared Madeline’s story on social media, it ended up going viral. Touching the hearts of many, while Zack, Madeline’s father says, “There’s really still a lot of that innocence and just pure joy still out there, and it’s a lot of fun to follow.”
The Los Angeles County Animal Care Foundation set up Madeline’s Unicorn Fund where people can donate $25 to receive their own unicorn license.
