According to cbssports.com, the NBA’s current age limit for entering the NBA draft is 19 years old, however, that may change in the near future. While he was speaking at an annual new conference after the league’s board of governors meetings in Las Vegas, Nevada Adam Silver said that he was hopeful that the age limit will be dropped from 19 to 18 years old when it comes time for the league’s next collective bargaining agreement. He is quoted in saying that, “It may be the case that it’s in all of our interests that we start impacting with these young players, especially because in our sport they are identified at such a young age, And begin working with them on their development then, not just basketball skills but increasingly there’s a focus on their mental health, their diets, just helping them build character and all of the important values around the sport.” Silver also stated that simply put, changing the age limit back is, “the right thing to do.” With so many recent changes in sports, such as players having the ability to be compensated for their names, image, and likeness, and more players passing up college to play overseas instead. It would make sense for the NBA to considering lowering its age once again in order to retain some of these young athletes so that they don’t go overseas instead and remain in the NBA.
