National “Pet Appreciation Week”, otherwise known as PAW, is celebrated annually on the first week in June, which this year is from the 2nd through the 8th. It’s a week when you can set aside some special time to really show your pet some love! After all, your pets are unconditionally devoted to you – don’t they deserve to feel how much you appreciate the role they play in your life?
Here are just a few ideas to get you started:
- Extra walks around town, or hikes in the nearby hills.
- For most of our pet pals, the way to their heart is certainly through their stomachs. Try giving them they’re favorite treats, investing in some supplements to better their health, or making them a home-cooked meal.
- How about getting them a new toy, and then of course, playing with them!
- Teach them a new trick, supplemented with lots of treats and praise, of course.
- More belly rubs, scratches behind the ears, and cuddles on the couch.
- Invest in your pet’s health by ensuring that they have all their vaccinations up to date and any other vet appointments that you might have neglected a bit.
- Conduct a safety check around your home to ensure that their environment is enriched and safe for them to thrive in.
- Volunteer at an animal shelter this week. If you don’t have time, you can always donate much-needed supplies like food, blankets, kitty litter, and toys.
- Spoil your pet with a grooming session at the local groomer.
- Assist a family member, friend, neighbor, or elderly person by spoiling their animals too.
The point is, to set aside extra time to shower your beloved pets with love and attention. After all, that’s all they really want, and for all they give to us, it’s the least we can do for them!
Pet Appreciation Week was initiated by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) in 1981. It aimed to raise awareness of the benefits of pets in our daily lives. In recent times, the hashtag #NationalPetWeek is used by pet owners on various social media platforms to honor and appreciate their pets.
