Stephanie Beatriz voices the main character, Mirabel, in Disney’s Oscar-nominated Encanto and beautifully sings a number of tunes written for the film by Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda.
One of those songs, in particular, is called “Waiting On A Miracle,” in which Mirabel longs to receive a special power like the rest of her family.
Beatriz, it turns out, actually recorded the song while experiencing her own kind of miracle: going through labor with her very first child! To make the feat even more impressive, the Brooklyn Nine-Nine star didn’t even tell anyone at the time that she was on her way to giving birth.
“I didn’t want to tell anybody at Disney because I didn’t want anyone to freak out,” Beatriz reflected on the recording session, which sounds much more dramatic than she reassures. “I was already having some contractions when we were scheduled to record that day. I was like, ‘Well, fingers crossed I finish the song before [the baby] comes!’”
“We knew [Beatriz] was very, very, very, very ready to have that baby,” Encanto director Byron Howard said. “But she did not tell us she was almost, almost ready.”
Miranda, too, apparently “liked to joke that she was singing ‘Waiting On a Miracle’ while waiting for her personal miracle.”
The next day after recording the song, Beatriz brought her new baby, Rosaline, into the world.
