Emma Watson presented the outstanding British film award to the Belfast team at the BAFTAs last night and notably used her platform at the mic to promote inclusivity.
The British actress and activist was introduced to the stage by host Rebel Wilson, who said, “Here to present the next award is Emma Watson. She calls herself a feminist, but we all know she’s a witch.”
When she took the stage, Watson gave a big smile and announced, “I’m here for all the witches, by the way.”
While the Harry Potter star did not elaborate on her comment, many believe it to be a sly dig at the series’ author J.K. Rowling, who has made numerous anti-transgender remarks over recent years.
In 2020, in response to some of Rowling’s comments, Watson wrote a series of tweets to express her unconditional support of the trans community.
“Trans people are who they say they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned or told they aren’t who they say they are,” Watson tweeted. “I want my trans followers to know that I and so many other people around the world see you, respect you and love you for who you are.”
