For the last Friday of the year, there are a few new films notably making the cut before 2022.
Lost Daughter, starring Olivia Coleman, Jessie Buckley, Dakota Johnson, Ed Harris, Peter Skarsgaard, Dagmara Dominczyk, Paul Mescal, Jack Farthing, and more, follows a woman’s beach vacation that takes a dark turn when she begins to confront the troubles of her unsettled past. Leda, who decides to take a holiday in a small coastal town in southern Italy, finds liberation in antiquation of loneliness and longing when her daughters leave home to be with their father in Canada. While away, Leda encounters a family whose brash presence proves unsettling, at times even threatening. When a small, seemingly meaningless event occurs, Leda is overwhelmed by memories of the difficult, unconventional choices she made as a mother and their consequences for herself and her family. The film, written and directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, will release on Netflix this Friday on December 31st.

Cyrano follows a man ahead of his time, Cyrano de Bergerac, who dazzles whether with ferocious wordplay at a verbal joust or with brilliant swordplay in a duel. But, convinced that his appearance renders him unworthy of the love of a devoted friend, the luminous Roxanne, Cyrano has yet to declare his feelings for her, and Roxanne has fallen in love, at first sight, with Christian. The film stars Peter Dinklage, Haley Bennett, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Ben Mendelsohn, Monica Dolan, Bashir Salahuddin, and more. It is directed by Joe Wright, based on screenplay writer Erica Schmidt’s 2018 stage musical of the same name. It will have a limited release on December 31st.
