“Dallas Buyers Club,” “Big Little Lies” Director Jean-Marc Vallée Dies at 58

Jean-Marc Vallée, the acclaimed director of Oscar-nominated Best Picture film Dallas Buyers Club, has died at 58 years old from a reported heart attack at his cabin outside Quebec City, Canada.

“He was a friend, creative partner and an older brother to me,” Nathan Ross, a partner in Vallée’s production company Crazyrose, said in a statement. “The maestro will sorely be missed but it comforts knowing his beautiful style and impactful work he shared with the world will live on.”

Vallée got his start working on Canadian music videos and shorts, making his feature with the French film Liste Noire, known by its English title Black List.

Vallée entered television production in 2017 as executive producer of the HBO drama “Big Little Lies.” He also directed the entire first season of the series, winning the Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series, Movie, or Dramatic Special Emmy award for his work.
